Subscription

Fixed monthly fee includes a set number of images. Predictable cost. If you exceed your allowance, you either wait for the next billing cycle or upgrade.

Credit-based

You buy or receive credits, and each generation costs a varying number of credits depending on resolution, speed, and model. Higher resolution or faster generation costs more credits.

Pay-per-image
Flux (via API providers)
No subscription. You pay for each image generated, typically $0.03 to $0.08 depending on the model and resolution. No wasted credits, no monthly minimum.

Hidden Costs to Watch For
GPU time vs image count (Midjourney)
Midjourney measures usage in GPU minutes, not image count. Fast mode uses GPU minutes from your allowance; relaxed mode queues jobs but does not deduct from your allowance. The "200 images" estimate assumes a mix of fast and relaxed. Heavy use of fast mode can exhaust your allowance earlier.
Credit expiry (Adobe Firefly)
Adobe Firefly credits expire at the end of each billing month. Unused credits do not roll over. If you pay for 250 credits and only use 100, those 150 credits are lost. Plan your usage accordingly or consider a lower tier.
Resolution surcharges
Some tools charge more credits or GPU time for higher-resolution images. A 2048x2048 image might cost 2-4x the credits of a 1024x1024 image on credit-based systems. Check the credit cost per generation at your target resolution.
API provider markup (Flux)
Flux is accessed through third-party API providers (Replicate, fal.ai, Together AI), each with their own pricing. The per-image cost varies by provider and can include platform fees on top of the base generation cost. Compare multiple providers before committing.
